Update failure

In the process of installing a batch of recent (last week) downloaded W2K-Pro
updates and hot fixes obtained via Windows Update, something went terribly
wrong with my ability to access Microsoft Update at all. I keep getting a
message to install some files to allow Update to work. Although the files
appear to get downloaded and registered, any installation fails repeatedly.
No error message or error code is ever provided giving a hint of why the
files won't install or even exactly where this problem originated. I am then
returned to a notice telling me to install files to allow Update to work.
Nothing will take me out of this loop. My computer is a stand-along PC.
Obviously, one of the downloaded updates or hot fixes previously installed
has caused this problem. Restarting (hard boot) the PC fixes nothing. Any
suggestions?

***READ ABOVE under "windows installer and installing...". You probably have
the same Windows Installer problem.
