Recently, and for over a week, I have been struggling with installing SP2 and
trying to get my computer to work again. My Device Manager was completely
empty with the exception of the top level (computer name). No devices would
show up at all.
The SP2 installation package may corrupt the registry by putting invalid
entries in the HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM.
There is a hotfix available from Microsoft. For a description of the
problem, go to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914450
To request that the hotfix be sent to you, go to
http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=6294451
They will send you a self extracting exe file. Run this file. It will
extract another exe file "WindowsXP-KB914450-v2-x86-ENU.exe". Run this file.
It will extract another exe file "fixcss.exe". Run this file to repair the
registry. After it's complete, restart the computer and check Device Manger
again. All of your hardware should show up now.
Good Luck.
