Windows Update Error 0x80072EE7

I had problems with updating Windows Defender after installing it in November
and had to manually update and now unable to do any Windows Updates. I get an
error message of 0x80072EE7 when I manually go to the Windows Update site. I
am using Windows XP SP2. I currently have avast! version 4.7 Home Editon for
AV (only software that I am able to update) and had Comodo 3.0 for a firewall
that I installed in November but recently uninstalled it to see if I could
get Windows Update to work. I looked at some of the information on the MS
support site to try but have been unsuccessful. Can a MS-MVP help me?

0x80072EFD," "Error 0x80072F76," or "Error 0x80072F78" error message when
you try to use the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site:

I have been receiving updates for my Anti-Virus avast! 4.7. I only have not
been able to receive updates for Microsoft Windows Update and Windows
Defender (anti-spyware). I have Windows Update set to automatically run but
noticed that the updates are not happening and tried to go to the site to
update and keep receiving error 0x80072ee7. Enclosed is about 30 or so lines
of my %windir%\windowsupdate.log when I go to Windows Update which I hope
maybe will help you figure out my problem.

Still looking for help or any suggestions on what to do to fix my Windows
Update problem. Firewall is not the problem. I do not have any software
accelerator programs that I am aware of. I added the Windows Update website
and the Microsoft Update website to the Trusted Sites list and did not find
any entries for Windows Update and Microsoft Update from the hosts file.
Below I copied and pasted 30 or so lines from my windowsupdate.log and
concerned since only one file was found under
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\WuRedir. Does any MS-MVPs have any
suggestions on what I should or need to do so I can make sure I receive
critical Updates for XP 2SP and any other Microsoft products?

If you never opted into Microsoft Update than that's expected, Erika. No
worry there.

That is the most likely culprit. There have been posts concerning Comodo
not allowing the installation of required files needed to update the system.

To ensure I install the correct Windows Update Agent under Method 2 is it
based on the PCs processor. My PC has an AMD Athlon 64 x2 4200+ processor so
does that mean that I should click on the link for Windows Update Agent

To ensure I install the correct Windows Update Agent under
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144 and Method 2 can anyone tell me if the
correct choice is it based on the PCs processor. My PC has an AMD Athlon 64
x2 4200+ processor and runs on Microsoft Windows Media Center Edition 2002 so
does that mean that I should click on the link for Method 2 for Windows
Update Agent "Windows, x64-based systems" or "AgentWindows, x86-based
systems"?
