Windows Vista Update

My update program has stopped working! The prompt says 8 updates available,
click here to install, I click install but after5 minutes I get an error code
that it was unable to install and I will be contacted if a solution is
found...When I shut the machine down I get a message that it is installing 1
of 8 updates and it will shut down afterwards. I can leave it on all night
and it never installs....Any suggestions? can I reinstall updater?
