Updates fail to install

Recently upgraded from 2000 Professional to XP Prof. Installed IE7 but it
could not update. Error 0x802000010. Tried other updates which download but
fail to install. Only explanation 'Problem on your computer prevents
installation'. No other error is given each time the already downloaded
updates fail, Very frustrating! Hope someone can help me. Thanks.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:

I should have started here first. Hours of hammering away at this problem,
and the fix was in this discussion. Thanks!
