can not install updates KB941568 or 941569 (December 2007)

I am using Windows XP and get the error code: 0x80070052 when trying to
install either KB941568 or KB941569. I have tried turning off my McAfee
Security Scan, Adaware, and even my windows firewall for this. I have
attempted this several times. Any suggestions?

I am running Windows 2000 Pro SP4 and had trouble with both as well. With
KB941568 I was successful in using the link shown in Automatic Updates to
manually download the file directly from the Microsoft website. However, for
KB941569 I have tried numerous things, including a call to Microsoft Support
and even they were not able to solve this one. The tech tried updating the
dll files for Windows Update and checked numerous configuration issues and
nothing seemed obviously problematic to him. In desperation, I have removed
the registry entries for the last few attempts, but I keep getting hung up at
about 50% of installation, whether it is using Automatic Updates or directly
from the Microsoft Support website. I too, would love an answer.

Have you moved the Program Files folder onto another partition than
the one Windows is installed on?

Hi all,

I know a bit about computers but not enough to know what to know how to move
the Program files to another partition or change anything in the registry.
I'll try manually updating but I doubt this will work. I just wish Microsoft
had better support for these two updates. I also haven't been able to
download IE 7 and I think this might be related to that issue as well.

Hi all,

Here is an update on my end: I tried to manually install KB941568 and
KB941569 on my computer through the Microsoft website; however, I get this
same error for both:

"KB941569 or (KB941568) set up error. The directory file can not be created."

Help?

Fine, but anyway, double check that. To check, simply enter %programfiles%
into the address bar in Windows Explorer and hit [Enter]. Note the folder
and path, which is displayed afterwards in Windows Explorer. Now enter
%systemdrive%\Program Files into the address bar and hit [Enter] again.
Is the same folder and path displayed like above? If true, you haven't
moved the Program Files folder.

I tried this, and apparently I haven't moved the Program Files Folder. Where
would i move it to? I'm not clear on how this would resolve the problem. Like
i said before, I know a little but not that much about IT so I'm not sure
what the next step is to take.

That's okay - but I'm out of the race for now then too. Sorry!

The error message you ran into may also occur if the Program Files
folder has been moved (which isn't support by MS (any longer), see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933700/en-us). That's why I wanted
you to double check if you've moved the folder.

Search for clues in the install logs that those updates create.
If you are installing them manually you may be able to supplement
those messages usefully by invoking a /verbose option.
In either case you could supplement the meaning of the log messages
by running ProcMon. E.g. doing that and searching in its trace for
denied might pinpoint the path that is causing the symptom
or at least show you what path was in use just before the message
was written to the log. Etc.

BTW are any network drives attached? This symptom has been known
to occur when a network drive is selected as the location for temporary
files but the user doesn't have authority to create directories on it. Etc.
