Compatibility issues after installing KB942615

Hi There,

Windows XP SP2 registry and system files got messed up after installing the
above-mentioned patches.
Before the patch, I had IE6 and it was upgraded to IE7 after updates were
installed.
It started showing invalid size of software.log and system.log, followed by
more serious problems, such as Windows crashing.
It culminated with Windows crashing every time I switch it on or off. I
shows a dark blue screen saying the to prevent further damages Windows is
displaying that screen. It does not say too much, it points out that either a
software of hardware is causing conflict.
I tried to restore the system files to the day before I installed the
update, but it didn't work.
I read some messages in this forum that after uninstalling the patch
everything became fine, but I am afraid the damage has been done to many
system files and registry.
Does anyone have an idea of how to resove this messy ?
Can I tried to repair Windows running the installation disk, even if it is
an old version of the Windows XP, I believe the Professional one.

Pardon? KB942615 exists for IE6 running on Windows XP SP2 and also for
IE7 on Windows XP. Installing KB942615 does *not* upgrade IE6 on Windows
XP SP2 to IE7. You may have installed IE7 and applied KB942615 afterwards.

What does that mean? Did you manage to choose a Restore Point but
that didn't resolve the issue or are you not able to choose a Restore
Point?

Are there any details on the "black screen" indicating on why Windows
refuses to start (like a hardware driver you may have installed too)?

You have to choose the CD of the version of Windows XP you've installed.
If it's a Home Edition, choose the CD containing Windows XP Home Edition,
if it's Windows XP Pro you've installed, choose the one containg Windows
XP Professional. But make sure that the SP2 for Windows XP is integretated
on the medium anyway. Otherwise you'll run into more serious trouble.

Hi Ottmar,

I did upgraded to IE7 during the upgrade process, I can't recall the exact
moment, I do recall of being prompted to upgrade to IE7 which I did.

I managed to run system restore to an earlier date but it didn't fix the
problem.

I do not get any black screen, but instead a dark blue screen listing a
couple of reason for the problem, but it does not help at all. When I get
home I'll details its content by posting another reply.

I have given up to fix my Windows XP. I have bought a new computer with
VISTA. My PC was 4 y/o anyway.

Most of my system are even older than 4 years. Anyway, if you feel
happy with your "solution", that's okay. It might be an expensive
one though.
