RE: KB942615 will not install; error code 80073712
I am in EXACTLY the same situation. EXACTLY the same error code and EXACTLY
the same messages in the WinUpdate log file. (Except I have Vista Home
Premium, not Vista Ultimate.)

There was a prior update that gave me this error code, and I was told to
take ownership of and delete the Pending.XML file in the \Windows\winsxs
folder (which I did), and then download Windows Update Agent 3.0 and install
it. I downloded the Windows Update Agent, but it wouldn't install. Kept
telling me "no install is necessary, because WUA is already installed." So,
I was never able to fix the previous update that gave me this exact same
problem. Now this new update is doing exactly the same thing.

WHAT'S GOING ON HERE! Let's get this fixed, shall we?! Is there a way to
force the WUA3.0 to re-install itself?

Re: KB942615 will not install; error code 80073712
I've sent the info to MS, and I'm currently on the phone with MS technical
support. (There is no charge for issues with Windows Update.) I'll post
what they say.

In less the 1 second, a Google Search came up with...

....you receive an error message that includes the following code when you
try to use Windows Update: "0x80073712":

Re: KB942615 will not install; error code 80073712
If you are referring to my original message, please note that I specifically
stated that the StoreDirty key did *not* exist. I spent over two hours on
the phone with MS technical support yesterday to no avail. We tried many
different steps, including all of what I've been able to find by Google
Search. The error occurrs during the download of the KB, not during the
install. We also tried the solution suggested by MS to the poster
LMacNeill, but that didn't work because pending.xml did not exist in
Windows\winsxs. If you have any suggestions, I'd certainly like to hear
them.

The first suggestion by MS yesterday involved stopping services wuauserv,
bits, and cryptsve, renaming two files (think it was the software
distribution), restarting the services, and running Windows Update. It
downloaded 273K out of 730K, and failed with error 80073712.

MS support is to call again this afternoon.

Re: KB942615 will not install; error code 80073712
Well, you won't like it, but it took a in-place-upgrade to fix the problem.
I let the MS support technician take remote control of my computer, and
after over two hours of attempts, she gave up and suggested the
in-place-upgrade. I've spent about three hours getting everything back to
the way I like it. She uninstalled my anti-virus and AdAware on purpose,
and Exact Audio Copy accidently, and I had no audio after the upgrade, but
she fixed that. I really have no problem with MS or the technician. I
think they went above and beyond to get this fixed, and give them a lot of
credit for their persistance. If you don't know how to do an
in-place-upgrade yourself you might want to contact MS Support to help you
with the whole issue. There is no charge for issues with Windows Update.
If you have any questions for me, please feel free.

Re: KB942615 will not install; error code 80073712
Try to FORCEINSTALL the Windows Update Agent. This can be done by running it
from the command line with ("WUA.Exe /WUFORCE /QUIET /NORESTART")
This should force install the agent on your workstation, not giving you an
error that wua is already installed.
