windows update 3.1 failure

I recently updated my OS from XP Home to XP Pro (I needed some of the extra
options). Since then, I have been unable to update windows via the windows
update site. It tries to install the newest updating software, but fails. I
have tried to manually install it in safe mode, reinstall the prior version
(update agent 3.0), and then update, but this also fails. I used an upgrade
CD to upgrade to XPPro. Everything else with the OS seems to work fine.
Any suggestions?????

This might have helped, but I eventually found the problem to be quite
similiar in that the upgrade from xp home to pro did something to the file
permissions. With much help from microsoft online support, I was able to
reset the file permissions by running a file called subinacl, and then
manually installing the new update software. Thank you very much for your
input however, as I will save the referenced page for future use!
