Updates will not download

Re-Post - corrected a silly typo in the subject line.

When trying to download updates on my XP system, Windows Update goes out and
finds the most recent updates available (which in my case are less than 10
total), but once I click on download and install, the window comes up that
says "Preparing for Download", but it never starts. I've let it set for
more than 2 hours and it never starts the download. It does not give an
error code at all. I can click on "Cancel", then it will send me to the
troubleshooter to offer suggestions - which obviously none of them has
worked for me.

Anyone else seen this? It just started about 2 weeks ago.

I'm having a similar problem with W2KPro.

Only since yesterday though. My auto updates are set to download and I
choose when to install. I have had the download icon at 0% since yesterday
and nothing has changed even with the changing of the settings in the Auto
download section.
I have also notice, strangely, that I can't access the windows update web
page manually.

Any ideas would also be very grateful.

FWIW from my location (Germany) it looks like the Microsoft servers are
running under heavy load and aren't even reachable all time...

I'm based in Ireland.
I had heard that there is a windows office 2007 update out a couple of days
ago. Although my other computer updated no problem.
