RE: 938979 with Error Code 80073712

i have the same error, i did what the online help said to do, so i called
microsoft, though i have only has the vista for 2 days, they wanted 59
dollars for help. I wonder if they made this error in oder to get more money?

I have had this error come up twice in the last 6 months. Generally, the
error appears as a result of a corrupt file within windows. Last July, I
contacted Microsoft support with no success until one support person provided
the following:



In order to troubleshoot this update issue, please try to perform the
following steps:



System File Check:

==============

I suggest we try the steps below to check the system files. This step will
check and replace the corrupt system files.



1. Click Start, please type “CMD� (without quotation marks) in the Start
Search bar and right click on the “cmd.exe� choose “Run as administrator�

2. The CMD command prompt windows will appear

3. Please type the following command and press Enter



SFC /Scannow



Note: System will take some time to scan for the system.



4. After scanning, please restart the computer and then check if this
problem still persists.



Also, please help collect the CBS log after performing the System File Check



The result of my system file check showed several corrupt files which could
only be fixed by running an in place Vista Upgrade. In other words,
re-installing Vista over itself. This took a couple of hours but it worked!!



I had the same problem last week. Ran the system file checker, received the
corrupt file response and re-installed windows without a hitch. BTW, the
re-install will not affect your currently installed programs. Let me know if
you need further info.
