Frustrating Updates on Dialup

I'm just looking for a place to vent and don't expect any real answers (kind
of like customer service). What the hell is it with updates that
automatically start whenever I get on dialup and totally make the internet
experience worthless while the update ties up the line? Last weekend I
tried going online and the update started. I said something like "fluff it"
and let it go about its business. About three hours later the icon in the
tray indicated "downloading updates - 17%" . Nice. Later I checked and the
icon was not there and there was no "click here to install updates" icon. So
I started back trying to browse the net and the fluffin' icon came back with
the message "downloading updates - 19%". I left it on most of rest of the
day and figured it would finally finish. I guess it never did because when I
went online today to get updates for a Logitech TV remote the fluffin
updates started up again and messed up the remote updates. The last time I
saw it it was around 47% and it's been on most of the day but it goes away
and then starts up again whenever it feels like it. In a couple of weeks
I'll be able to get a DSL connection and hopefully the updates won't be as
painful.

It is true. the Internet and the updates for just about any product no
longer revolve around dial-up speeds. For those with dial-up, so much
(other than updates) is missed. The internet will be a whole different
experience for you when you do get your DSL (high-speed) connection
installed.

You /could/ select the Notify Only option (no updates are downloaded or
installed without your permission).

What you see may be normal.Updates download automatically to a low
priority.
If your computer is doing anything on the network, download of updates
may slow or stop.

Open Windows/Microsoft Update
Click Settings on the left side and change the option to notify but
not download.
Then when you are notified, you can choose when to go to
Microsoft/Windows Update and get the updates at a time convenient for
you.
