A couple of weeks ago, I had to "repair" XP pro. My machine has been trying
to download and update 81 or so files with no success. I'm reading the
different
"fixes", but scared to death of really messing things up. OK, question, is
PA Bear actually part of Microsoft Tech Support and should I trust his fix
before the Windowssecrets.com guy? I'm just a rookie, so please be gentle.

A million thanks to PA Bear! I took the chance and it worked! I downloaded
about 82+ updates.

Now for another problem: 5 updates, kb936181, kb890859, kb 931784,
kb900485, and kb920872 keeps wanting to update. They get "successful"
downloaded and install, but keep on popping up in Auto Update. 3 out of the
5 are in the control panel. kb936181 and kb890859 are not in the control
panel.

As for KB936181 see some of (not only my) various posts on the update:

For KB890859, KB931784, KB900485 and KB920872, you may want to download
these updates manually, *save* the EXE files onto your harddisc let's
say in a folder named "Downloads" located on local drive C:. Afterwards
open Notepad and copy&paste the following into Notepad and *save* the
file as "update.cmd" with the filtype "all" on your desktop:

---Copy the lines below this line---
cd /d C:\Downloads
start /wait WindowsXP-KB890859-x86-ENU.exe /o /q /z
start /wait WindowsXP-KB900485-v2-x86-ENU.exe /o /q /z
start /wait WindowsXP-KB931784-x86-ENU.exe /o /q /z
start /wait WindowsXP-KB920872-x86-ENU.exe /o /q /z
cls
echo Installation complete, please restart Windows now!
pause
exit
---Copy the lines above this line---

Afterwards please restart Windows manually to complete the installation.
