Administrative Tools --> Services

You have to make sure these are starting automaticly

SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS or SQL)
SQL Server Active Directory Helper (Optional)
SQL Server Browser
SQL Server VSS Writer

If they are disabled change them automatic start and try to install KB
921896 again.

Hi Humanist,
I too am getting an error code when trying to install KB 921896. I've read
through the threat and tried everything suggested, but it's still not
working. I'm so frustrated, wasted so much time that I'm more interested in
just leaving it and see what happens. Something's not working. Any ideas?
