KB898461 Still Won't Install!
Help!

No matter what fixes I tried, I am still getting "the updatebr.inf" file is
invalid when I try windows update. I'm running Windows XP Professional.

I tried the fixes to rename SoftwareDistribution, the spupdsvc.exe rename,
etc., etc. I must have gone through a dozen or so messages with different
options which seemed to work for others, but I'm having no luck.

I even went through and tried the methods contained in:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798

and still I cannot run Windows Update or patch with SP2. Both give that
"the updatebr.inf" file is invalid.

Please help if you can!

KB898461 is the only update failing? All other updates are installed?
Any additional hints to be found in the event log (Start -> Run ->
eventvwr.msc [Enter/OK])?

Have you tried downloading KB898461 manually and installing it?

Re: KB898461 Still Won't Install!
Hello Freudi,

SP2 also fails with the same error. Previous patches installed correctly,
but starting at KB898461, I just can't get past that one, so that's where I
am stuck.

I can't get anymore updates until 898461 installs because as soos as I go to
Microsoft Update, it says that I need 898561.

And, yes, I have downloaded and tried 898461 manually and the same result.

Thanks,
Nesser

Pardon? You don't have SP2 for Windows XP installed yet?

And yes, I would like to see an answer from you to the question:

I can't get SP2 because of the KB898461 problem. Or, if I bypass KB898461
and try to run the SP2 install directly, I get the same error as KB898461.

I checked the event viewer and there were no hints to be found.

here's the last few lines from the sp log file:

Assuming you've installed KB885523 already
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...e00d004659f6):

Try to download the standalone version of SP2 manually via
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...5-9e368d3cdb5a
save the file, boot into Safe Mode of Windows and try to install the
SP2 from there.

And yes, I'm asking the third an last time for any additional hints
to be found in the event log (Start -> Run -> eventvwr.msc [Enter/OK]).

Freudi
