Windows Update KB896423 hangups

What's with this update? I've tried installing it on several Asus boards
(M2N-MX SE, M2N-MX, M2V-MX and some MSI boards. When you install this update
the computer will hang on the welcome screen and not go any further. You can
boot into safe mode, but the system will not load Windows unless the update
is removed.

Anyone any ideas? These are quite common boards based around Nvidia and Via
chipsets.
