Windows Updates

I get the following during a Windows Update session -

"Some updates could not be installed"
"The following updates were not installed"
"Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1"

The Update notification icon (Shield) is a constant feature on the task bar
and I am at my wits end trying to get a successful download !

On the WU Website, select your history of updates - now click on failed
update (red mark) and see if there is an error code.
If there is an error code, write it down and post back or in the
alternative, do a search for the error code.

It is assumed that you are using Windows XP.

Many thanks but no success - however, I have 'fiddled' further. Search via
Windows Search for msi.dll revealed two versions of Installer -
3.0.3790.2180 and 3.1.4000.2435. Both versions show "Unknown Application" to
open. I know very little about file associations and have'nt had the courage
to try any of the following which are shown -
Creative Media Source 5 Player
I.E.
M. Money
M. Photo Prem 10
Notepad
Paint
W. Media Player
W. Picture & Fax Viewer
Word Pad
Would selecting any of them do the trick and, if so, which one do you suggest?

Panic over ! Continued searching Forum and found answer in Article 943144.
86 Updates now installed.
