84 updates none will install

#1. win xp pro 2002 sp2 installed 2 wks ago crashed last week with remote
procedure call error and had to reinstall to get it to work at all, at all.
now updater downloads 84 updates but cant install any of them. tried and
tried. what next

#2. this might give a clue as to some creeping sickness. when i open up
control panel applet, most of the icons have been replaced by a sort of
red/white hash icon. if i log as a different user, they are ok.
what to do with this machine???

Search and Search before asking...

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation

Can't figure that out?

Get Dial-a-Fix:
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix:
- Windows Installer
- Windows Update
- All the Registration Center options.

Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"
Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".

Then click "GO" and wait until it is done... Reboot will be needed.

- Download/Install Windows Update v3.

(You *may* need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce"
right after the reboot - immediately after logging in.)

- Download/Install the 927891 patch.

- Reboot.

- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for/install updates.

- Come back and let us know how things went!
