Windows update not working!!! HELP!!!

I have been trying to update my windows xp to windows xp sp2 so I can
activate my iphone. When I got to windows update it searches for updates for
my computer but it doesn't go anywhere. It's been searching for 3 hours now.
HELP!!! I need to activate my iphone and it says that it doesn't work with
anything but xp sp2 or later.
