Updates won't install
After recent PC problems when it was just shutting down as if the power was
shut off. I used my XP home edition cd to carry out a repair and then went to
Update where 85 items were listed.
These downloaded after a few attempts as the pc still randomly shuts down.
However they won't install.. The 85 update also download via Automatic
Updates but these also fail to install.
I've used troubleshooter to resolve this problem and also tried with Norton
turned off without success.
Hope you can help
Thank You.

RE: Updates won't install
Hello terryr,
Try this solution at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
Reboot
Now try to install your updates.
Also a free prog. called "dial-a-fix", will sort out your download prob.and
some others if you need,.....
Go ahead and download Dial-a-fix.
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix
Reboot into safe mºde (F-8)
Click the green checkmark and click Go.
After it has finished,
Reboot
Can you go to Windows Update, select Express (Get high-priority updates),
and apply all offered updates

RE: Updates won't install
Hello Engel
Thank you for your reply and the suggestions therein.
Firstly I tried all the fixes on the support page , eg click, start, run cmd.
cmd prompt etc.
I'm pleased to report that by downloading and running Dial-a-fix in safe
mode. all the
required updates have been downloaded and installed.
To check, i've just visted Updates and none are available for my installation.
Again, many, many thanks for you prompt reply and help that brought a
frustrating couple of days
to a happy conclusion.
Kind Regards.

RE: Updates won't install
Hello,
I was having trouble with my laptop installing Windows updates so I read and
did what this post says to do. I added that file to my registry and ran Dial
a Fix. About 10 updates still won't install. And now a new and scarier
problem.....my hard drive of 18 GB is FULL. About a month ago I ran Disk
Defrag and less that 1/2 my hard drive was full. Can you help? What could
have caused my drive to fill up so fast? I've run all kinds of file cleaners
and removed tons of files and still only have 500 MB left of space. Any
ideas what I should do?
