I had this same problem with my wife's laptop, getting the error code
of 80070490 when windows update tried to contact microsoft. After a
long and arduous process with Microsoft support, I finally ended up
'upgrading' (actually reinstalling) windows vista basic, which fixed
the problem (be sure to choose upgrade, not install, when you run
setup.exe) but doesn't it seem excessive to have to reinstall a
product just to fix one problem?

What worked for me was to run CHKDSK from the command prompt. Make sure that you run it as an administrator or it wont run.
