error 800106ba and no way to reinstall it
Suddenly I get this message and Win Defender doesn't start.
I tried to restore the system, but nothing changed
I downloaded Defender from Microsoft's site in order to reinstall it, but it
says Vista already contains Defender, so I don't need to install it.
There is no way to disinstall it and re-install it, so how can I solve the
problem?

RE: error 800106ba and no way to reinstall it
Hello Webgirl,

You might try this.

Go to the main Windows Update window and click on "Installed Updates" (on
the left-hand side of the window, at the bottom), and then remove "Update for
Microsoft Windows (KB931099)" (only).

Reboot.

Reboot again.

Go back to Windows Update, and re-install the same update, by clicking on
the Check for Updates button.

This should essentially re-install Windows Defender on Vista.

I hope this post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut.

RE: error 800106ba and no way to reinstall it

I did as you suggested, but when I click on Check for Updates it gives me
this error:
80070422 and it won't download any update....

I also tried to re-instal my antivirus software because it gave me a problem
too, and I though it was related to my Defender problem.
But even if I tried with 4 different antivirus programs, the installing
procedure stops half.way...

It's a mess, my PC is completely vulnerable and nothing works.... :-(

Thanks again (and forgive my mistakes, English is not my language....)

RE: error 800106ba and no way to reinstall it
Hi Webgirl,

If you receive Windows Update error 80070422 while downloading updates, you
might need to change the Windows Update service settings, and then restart
the service.

Good luck

You may be getting the error if you don't have 'automatic updates' turned on, or your firewall isn't configured to correctly for your security applications.

I am on dial-up, so I've turned automatic updates off. Since I've done that, I've also had to disable Windows Defender.

These are free anti-spyware programs that work with Vista (they need to be manually updated)

Re: error 800106ba and no way to reinstall it
I have Avast anti-virus. I has always worked with Windows Defender firewall.
Suddenly, Defender has started giving me the error 800106ba, and the
antivirus stopped working (without giving any errors). I tried reinstalling
it, and also installing other anti-virus (also not free), but the process
always stopped in the middle. I don't understand why it stopped working when
before I never had problems with it. I followed your suggestions, but it
doesn't let me complete the procedure.

Re: error 800106ba and no way to reinstall it
Before you can install a new program or new version, you have to completely
remove any remnants of the old program. Sometimes failed or broken
installs/uninstalls can block proper install processes. Vista uninstaller
does a poor job of uninstalling and leaves a lot of install/uninstall debris
on your system. You can "search and destroy" these blocking remnants
manually with or without the help of Windows Install CleanUp Utility, or you
can get and use a good uninstaller program like Smarty Uninstaller. Smarty
UI does the best job of finding remnant debris from broken
installs/uninstalls and removing it from files, folders and registry.
Details and downloads in the following tutorial:

Re: error 800106ba and no way to reinstall it
Thanks I'll try what you suggested.

I also tried another trick a friend of mine suggested me.
I replaced the files in the folder crogram files\win defender with files
of another PC, same Vista version, where Defender was still running without
any problems.
Unfortunately, in his case this method worked, in mine nothing has
changed... :-(

Ciao

Re: error 800106ba and no way to reinstall it
Hi Webgirl. I just got this problem and I think it's some kind of virus. It
doesn't let me install any new anti-virus, disables all services that are
related to the computer security (updates, defender, anti-virus, etc).

I don't know if you already solved your problem. If so, please let me know
how. It's really hard to find info about this problem on the web.

Thanks, GDV

Re: error 800106ba and no way to reinstall it
Hi all,

Ditto to webgirl and GDV!
I have just inhereted the exact same problem. THe only thing I can think of
is that it is a virus. I am unable to install or run ANY type of protection
software, Windows or otherwise. I found another post with the same problem by
'karl'.

I am guessing we are not the only victims and this happend to me just the
other day so fingers crossed someone comes up with a fix somehow!

I am out of ideas!
