Fress space wiper
Anyone know of a free wiper for Vista 32-bit? I used to use something called
"Eraser" in XP but can't seem to find it now!

Open a command prompt and type:

cipher /w:C:\

This will wipe free space on your C drive.

Bear in mind that the only truely reliable way to destroy data on a hard
drive is to utterly destroy the hard drive surface.

Hi Harold, I am a different Mark. (Mark Conrad)

The most recent version of Eraser worked great for me also, on Vista
Ultimate.

I only use Eraser for wiping the free space on my Vista partition, in
order to produce a smaller sized compressed backup file of Vista.

They do not really have easy-to-learn instructions for doing this, but I
managed to figure it out.

Eraser user has to set up his own "wipe" pattern, in my case the pattern
was all hex zeros.

Only thing I could not figure out was why they had 3 bytes to set, to
all zeros.

Oh well, at least I did not zap Vista when I wiped free space, but sure
wish I knew more about why they have 3 bytes, only the first byte being
set to all hex zeros by default.

A user is required to select bytes number 2 and 3 if he wants to use
them, which is what I did.

(I set bytes 2 and 3 to all zeros also)

Confusing about those settings, no details in the Help files.
