Windows Fax and Scan - Coonect to a Fax Server on my Network

I can fax locally when I connect a telephone line to the modem in my laptop.
However when i want to use my fax server to send a fax I cannot "connect to
a fax server on my network" from the "Add" "Fax Account" wizard in Vista
Business. I am connecting via pptp vpn. I am authenticating with
administrator account on the domain. XP Pro authenticates via vpn and adds
fax/printer fine and i can send faxes fine. when i connect with the Vista
Business OS i cannot seem to authenitcate to the server. I can ping the
server both with IP and Host name from the Vista OS over through the pptp
tunnel, i can access resources from the pptp tunnel. I can Open shared files
on the server through the pptp tunnel by typing in \\servername\share.
Indeed I can even access the printer/fax in the Vista OS by browsing the
shares on the server. However when i try to add an account, by right
clicking "fax", selecting run as administrator or not selecting run as
administrator, selecting open, selecting tools, selecting accounts, and
clcking the add button in the "Fax Accounts" window, Clicking "Connect to a
fax server on my network" and finally typing in the server name \\Fax1, or
Fax1, or 10.32.0.25, or \\fax1\fax i get this message: "You do not have
security permissions to complete this operation. contact your fax
administrator for more information".

I have tried turning off the firewall, turning on the firewall, adding
permissions, everyone, authenticated users, even my computer name, to the
share on the server. Running updates on server 2003, I have changed
passowords, I have tried opeing programs and features in control panel and
unchecking windows fax and scan, rebooting, and rechecking windows fax and
scan. I upgraded the us robotics modem driver to the newest one 11 2006. I am
thinking NO WORKY! Can someone help me with a my therapist first and then we
can fix the fax later. i am loosing it over here. HELP!!!!! I Love
Microsoft I hate Microsoft - stop contradicting yourself!

Apparently you haven't seen the other posts in this group. Microsoft is
incapable of solving this problem. Take it up with them. File a support
claim. They owe you a solution.

Thanks Russ. I read the posts. Thank you for all the time you spend helping
out. All your hard work is truly appreciated. I don't know how you keep it

That's nice of you.
I just wish Microsoft would get this fixed. It must be pretty frustrating
for users who were expecting this to work.

I understand the issue now. Windows fax and Scan works fine if configured
correctly. The configuration must occur on the local Vista OS (in this case
my laptop). On my laptop, I opened the Print Mannagement mmc from
administrative tools. Right Click Print Servers, Select Add, type in name or
ip of the print server, (i used ip). Open Windows Fax and Scan, and click
tools, fax accounts, select the prtiner server just added, and send a fax.

I think in the help information available microsoft assumes that the print
server has already been added. There could probably be a note added to the
"fax setup" help document that would point the user in the direction of the
Print Server configuration, like "...be sure the print server the fax is
located on is added to Print Servers, in the Print Management mmc of the
local workstation, otherwise authentication will fail when adding the fax..."
