Canon 8800F scanner stopped working

Hi All
My Canoscan 8800F no longer works. I get a message " Cannot communicate with Scanner. Cable may be disconnected or scanner may be turned off". I have tried reinstalling drivers including the latest driver and reconnecting the device (device Manager says “Working Properly”). And reloaded software from disc and all looks fine except for the error message. I think my tuneup utilities/registry cleaner program may have cleaned or deleted an essential file from start/registry but not sure.
I know its not the scanner, leads, or software as I have loaded it on my laptop and the scanner works fine
Please Help!
