A guess might be that the 2100 install --
Walked on some HP "common" registry entries
Replaced one or more newer driver related modules that are common to both.
I'd try disconnecting the 5850, rebooting, uninstalling the 5850 drivers,
rebooting,
Check to see that the 2100 still works then
Reinstall the 5850 drivers. after the reinstall is complete, reconnect the
5850.
Then check again to insure that both printers work.
There is also a possibility that the parallel to USB adapter software mucked
something up.
When I encounter similar problems, one of the first steps is to disable
printer status monitoring.
The status monitors can get confused as to which printer they are to
monitor.
In some cases, uninstalling a printer driver does not do a good job of also
cleaning out the appropriate Registry entries.
This can require manual removal of the appropriate entries, unless there is
a "cleanup" utility available from the printer OEM.
