Cannot print multiple copies
I am having trouble printing with my Windows Vista Ultimate laptop. I have found a few similar threads and tried the advice, but nothing has worked. Any suggestions? Here are the details:
Lenovo Thinkpad T61
Windows Vista Ultimate, fully updated
Printers:
Brother MFC-8440
Primo PDF
Problems:
I first noticed a problem about a week ago. I could not print multiple copies of any document on the Brother printer. I have been using this printer under this same setup for over a year with no trouble, then one day it stopped working properly. No matter the application (Word, Excel, notepad, etc), it will only print one copy no matter how many I ask for. I have tried: clicking and unclicking collate, uninstalling and reinstalling all printer drivers, starting and stopping the print spooler service.
At the same time, PrimoPDF (a freeware PDF "printer") stopped working. It simply does not save a copy of a PDF like it used to. All the same techniques tried here with no luck.
Though the problems are slightly different, I suspect they are related.
Additional Info:
I am also seeing the following error messages in my Administrative Event Viewer:
SpoolerWin32SPL
Event ID 4
The print spooler failed to reopen an existing printer connection because it could not read the configuration information from the registry key S-1-5-18\Printers\Connections. The print spooler could not open the registry key. This can occur if the registry key is corrupt or missing, or if the registry recently became unavailable.
My hunch is that something has happened to the spooler's registry entries which is interfering with these two printers (though with different results). But I don't know how to reset them. Any help? At the very least, if anybody has the "S-1-5-18\Printers\Connections" registry key, can you tell me exactly what is in it?
Thank you!

Re: Cannot print multiple copies
"S-1-5-18
is the local system account.
There is no printer for system, and the spooler should filter this event
since it's drives me nuts and points you down the wrong path.
Is your users account listed in printer security in printer properties?
Launch printmanagement.msc
expand the machine, open the printers node, open the Brother properties.
Also what print processor is in use on the Advanced tab of printer
properties?

Security details...
My user account and the administrator user account (me) are allowed to Print, Manage Printers, and Manage Documents. User "CREATOR OWNER" is allowed only to Manage Documents, and user "Everyone" is allowed only Print.
Thank you.

Sorry, for some reason my message was cut off. Full reply:

Print Processor:
I have tried switching back and forth between WinPrint and BRMFC PRINT. Same results.
Another wrinkle...
At the same time these problems began, I also started having trouble with Print Preview in MSOffice applications. I used to be able to automatically move from page to page by pressing Page Down enough times. Now it just stays stuck on the first page, no matter how many times I press it. I have to click Next Page in the Print Preview window to move to the next page.
Thank you.

I fixed it! I fixed it! I fixed it!
For some reason, my User account no longer had full control over the Windows\temp directory. By assigning myself full control, I can now print multiple copies with the Brother, generate PDFs with PrimoPDF, and page down in Print Preview. Yippee!!!!

I had the same problem. Since it worked for you, I checked mine. By
assigning myself full permissions to this directory, mine is also
*_fixed_*!
For anyone who doesn't know how to do this,
* right-click on the windows\temp folder.
* Choose "propertries," then "security."
You will see a listing that may include, CREATOR OWNER, SYSTEM,
Administrators, Users, and TrustedInstaller.
*Click once on "Users (-your pc information-\Users)"
-example: mine was listed as *Users (mike-laptop\Users)*-
*In the permissions window below, the Users entry should have all of
the same check-marks as the Administrators entry. To add check-marks,
Click the "Users" entry once to hi-light it, and click "Edit." Add the
needed check-marks.
It fixed the problem immediately for me.
Thanks for the info; good luck everyone,
MikeW
