MS Fax can't see my modem
I am still trying to get to grips with my new PC with Vista Ultimate on it
and get back to being able to do stuff I could do on my old PC. Latest is the
series is sending a fax.

Microsoft Fax is installed and appears as a printer when printing/faxing a
document. Opening MS Fax found the document sat in the outbox.

Investigating the settings in TOOLS>FAX SETTINGS the page says "choose the
fax modem you want to use......." It then has the title "device name" as if
there should be a list and a greyed out button labelled "select device"

This made me think the modem was not installed as i expected to see it
listed so i went to device manager to check on the modem. It is not only
there but reports itself as working OK.

How do i get the two to talk to each other. I confess to being stumped at
this stage

Thanks

Re: MS Fax can't see my modem
Hi Paul,

Have you installed an external fax modem or did your PC come with an
internal fax modem? If I understand your request correctly, I think you're
looking at a fax driver and not a modem, which is why I ask about a separate
modem for your computer.

The Fax entry that you see in the Printers folder is a driver that the
Windows Fax and Scan program in Vista uses to convert files to .tif format
for sending faxes. It's not actually a fax modem. To send a fax, your
computer needs a built-in fax modem or you'll need to connect an external
modem--both require an analog phone line. (If your computer is connected to
a network in an office or enterprise, you might also be able to connect to a
fax server but you'll have to contact an administrator in the company to
find out.)

To see if your computer has a built-in fax modem, check the device manager
info or the manufacturer specifications. To connect to the fax modem or
server, see the information here for starters:
