can't change Vista fax settings
I have Vista Ultimate and am set up as Administrator. The Windows Fax & Scan
settings for General and Security are literally - all - greyed out. I can't
select a modem, specify send/receive options or change anything else. The
only two changes I made prior to this problem were: (1) check the Exceptions
box for Windows Fax & Scan in the Windows Firewall (2) under the Security
tab, to allow Permissions for Everyone. Prior to making this change, I could
send faxes but not receive them (another issue). When I go to Advanced
Security Settings, it says the owner is "Network Service," (not my
administrator name btw) and it won't let me change the owner either. Any
thoughts on how to fix this? Thanks!

Did you elevate your permissions through UAC when you tried this?

Re: can't change Vista fax settings
I turned off the UAC and restarted the computer. Now I can change the owner
in the advanced security settings to either me or User-PC/Administrator, but
the settings in General tab under Fax Settings are still greyed out, so I
can't set the fax modem.

Please try what Hal suggested instead of what you tried and report back.

Re: can't change Vista fax settings
Okay everyone, the fax appears to be working now, this is what I did: I
turned off the UAC completely, because I don't know what it means to elevate
my settings. I deleted the modem from device manager. I have two Admin
accounts set up, and I had to go back to the original Admin account (couldn't
do it from the new Admin account for some reason - I thought Admin privileges
let you do anything system related) to let Vista find the modem again and
reinstall a driver. After the driver was installed, I opened Fax & Scan and
fixed the settings to send and receive. Then I went back to my new Admin
accoutn and used one of the free online fax services to send a fax to the my
PC and it worked. Hooray! Thank you for your help. Now if I could only get
my Epson 1200U to work on Vista Ultimate...everything would be great!
