Printer won't stay installed
I'm running Windows Vista, but I have a PSC all in one that was originally
programmed for Windows XP. I have gone to the PSC manufacturer and obtained
an updated driver for the PSC, and I can install it and use the printer, but
when I shut the computer down and restart it the driver does not stay
installed. I have to re-install the driver every time I start the computer.
Is there a way to make this driver stay installed?

Re: Printer won't stay installed
It's a HP F340. I have also gone to microsoft.com and done a full update
install, as well as getting the new driver from HP for the PSC, nothing seems
to work.
Thanks for any help!

Re: Printer won't stay installed
Is the printer connected to USB?
Is there any HP software installed on the machine that deletes the printer
and driver when it can't contact the device (HP CUE Discovery)?

Re: Printer won't stay installed
The AIO is connected to USB, and the driver I got from HP for this device is
the only HP software that has been installed on this machine, which is a
DELL. Nothing else is hooked up to USB, and no other external hardware of any
kind exists for this machine.

Re: Printer won't stay installed
The spooler does not delete the printer nor drivers. This is a function of
the user.
Is the print spooler service running when the printer disappears?
When the spooler is not running there will be no printers in the printers
folder.

Re: Printer won't stay installed
This problem only happens when I shut the computer down. If I leave it
running, the driver stays installed and I can print with it without problem,
but every time I shut it down and restart it, the driver is no longer
installed. I am prompted to install the driver for the AIO every time I start
the computer, but only if the AIO was already turned on. If the AIO gets
turned on AFTER I start the computer, it doesn't detect the AIO and so
doesn't ask me to install a driver for it, and I can't access it at all when
I try to print something. As long as I have the AIO turned on before I start
the computer, I am prompted to install the driver, which I have downloaded
and stored on the system, so I can install it without hassle, but why should
I have to do this every single time? For some reason, the driver will NOT
stay installed when I shut the computer down, no matter how many times I try.

Re: Printer won't stay installed
The spooler will never delete the printer driver. This requires user
interaction.
Check the configuration of the USB bus in device manager. I'm assuming the
device is attached directly to the computer. These things are a storage
device, scanner, as well as a printer. Make sure the other devices work
when the printer is not working.
If a driver is requested by the bus enumerator, it's not the spooler that is
making this request.

Re: Printer won't stay installed
Somehow, we are not communicating here.
The ONLY time this happens is when I turn the computer off.
It NEVER happens when I have installed the driver and leave the computer
turned on, regardless of how long I leave it turned on.
It ALWAYS happens when I shut down and restart the computer. However, it
only happens if the AIO is turned on BEFORE I restart the computer. If the
AIO is turned off when the computer starts up, it doesn't ever recognize the
printer at all.
As long as the AIO is turned on, the computer will detect the "new device",
and will prompt me to install the driver I have downloaded from the
manufacturer. Once this process is complete, I can print to the AIO without
any trouble whatsoever, UNTIL I TURN THE COMPUTER OFF AND RESTART IT!
There is no other external hardware installed on or connected to this
computer. There are no other HP programs installed on this computer. I don't
ever go to the spooler except to check for this printer, and it is only there
when I start the computer, with the AIO turned on, and go through the whole
installation of the driver again.
Please stop saying that this can only happen with user interaction. I am not
interacting with it at all. I am simply using the shut down and restart
function built into the Vista OS.

Re: Printer won't stay installed
The next time you turn off/on the computer, verify that the printer driver
is still installed by opening the Printers Folder, right click any white
space in the folder and select Server Properties
On the drivers tab, is the print driver still installed?
Can you copy files from the storage hardware on the device when printing
does not work. I think the root issue is not in printing but the hardware
installation.
A USB device may no longer work correctly after Windows Vista resumes

longer work correctly.
