What OS is the print server running?
Check the file dates in \system32\spool\drivers
If anything is updated on the server, the clients machine will be out of
sync with the server and go into the Update state.
Here's some documentation on the security policy regarding silently updating
the clients (XP behavior) and how to configure the policy for your need.
