Vista Ultimate sees Canon LIDE 30 but can't install Vista driver

I am running Vista Ultimate with a Canon LIDE30 USB scanner.
On the Canon site there's a compatible driver for download and also a de
installer prog.
No matter what but when i install the correct driver the scanner can't be
installed with it.

When i try Veu scan it is done in a jiffy.

HELP!!

You are disconnecting the scanner, deleting any icons for it in Fax & Scan,
uninstalling any Canon software for it that appears in Remove Programs,
rebooting, installing the software and only connecting the scanner when
either the installation procedure tells you to or when you reach [Finish]?

That's a normal requirement for any USB connected device, to stop Windows
installing any driver it happens already to have.
