Why does windows disconnect me, then restart?

When I go to enter items in my online groups, or save things to my Microsoft
Word, I will get the message that "Internet Explorer has stopped working",
then a split second later, it says "Internet Explorer is restarting". But
everything up to that is lost, and I never know when the message will come up.

Why do these messages keep coming up? I have Windows Vista Home basic for my
operating system.

Can someone please tell me how to prevent these messages from ruining what I
am working on?

Using Control Panel > Problems and Solutions MIGHT give you (or someone here) a
clue? Or Event Viewer.
