Updates won't configure properly

Hi, I'm having problems configuring updates on my laptop. It will download and initially install them fine, but when I reboot it starts to configure them and then says 'Updates not configured properly. Reverting changes' or something similar. It's driving me

so any advice would be very gratefully received!
