Shutting down Vista

For about the last week (I guess since the latest Vista update), my computer
won't shut down; I have to do a hard boot. Microsoft Update is set to run
automatically every morning at 2 AM and like this morning, I came home at
7:30 AM to find Windows in the process of shutting down. Yesterday, I
rebooted the computer and I sat there for 20 minutes and it still saying
"Shutting down". Has anybody had this problem?

Vista Ultimate 64 bit
GA-M59SLI-S5 mobo
Athlon X2 3800
Corsair XMS2 2 GB dual channel PC6400
EVGA 7950GT KO video
2 250 GB WD drives in SATA II RAID striped

I checked Event viewer and there are some errors about booting performance
in the performance logs, but I hardly think 80-100 seconds is extreme enough
to warrant an error there. There's a few warnings but they don't seem
serious either.

To begin I would definitely run Check Disk (chkdsk.exe /f /r). Go into
"Computer\C:\properties\tools\check now" and check both boxes (fix errors
and recover sectors). This can also be done by pressing <F8> during startup
and choosing the recovery console (do they still call it that?) if you can't
get the system to reboot from the GUI. Also, can the computer shutdown in
SAFE mode? If not I'd look at the startup entries (msconfig.exe). Hope

I should have said if the computer CAN shutdown in SAFE mode then look at
the startup entries (for something that could be interfering with shutdown
in normal mode).

I've got exactly the same problem ie. it won't complete the shut down. It
does shut down quickly and easily in safe mode. I've then run msconfig as you
suggest and I can see various applications in the startup tab (have already
disabled most following someone else's advice). Thing is, all I have now in
startup is Windows Defender, NVIDIA drivers, soundcard drivers and O/S. All
drivers are up to date and there are no conflicts. I don't think any of the
startup contents I've mentioned are things I want to disable...how do I solve
the problem? Is it possible to find out precisely which things are switched
on at normal startup and not in safe mode?

Have also run check disk which found no problems.

Nicolas said he still had Windows Defender in his startup group. This makes
me wonder if it isn't that program, because My Defender hasn't been able to
update itself for the last month or more, always ends with some error.

Hei all.

I talk to Microsoft 2 times today and we think we found out whats the
matter. I use a USBkey as readyboost and that was the problem. I removed it
and now my computer shutdown as it should.!!!!

We also found out that the motherboard chipset was not yet supported for
vista 64bit, only 32bit. But it had no effect on my problemm above.!

Hope you can use my info.. Please feedback to me. Thanks.

Also I will keep you all updated as my dialog with Microsoft progress.

Not sure what you mean by using a USBkey as readyboost but I don't have any
USB memory sticks or anything permanently plugged in that's what you mean.
Only USB devices I have are printer, cordless mouse and modem. I'm running 32
bit Vista so chipset not a problem.

On the Defender side Pwnbroker, I managed to get a Defender update the other
day so it is now working smoothly. I think.

Shut down problem persists. Am now getting used to it, although it seems a
very stupid and fundamental problem. Vista is dripping with diagnostics and
software tweaks but cannot help with this...
