Disk space usage
I have Windows Vista Home Premium running on an HP Pavilion laptop computer.
I have noticed that my disk space usage doesn't add up, because my total
usage always exceeds what I can account for by 20-30GB, even after I have
included hidden/system files (or so I believe). However, I recently
installed SP2 for Windows Vista Home Premium, and noticed that somehow a
large amount of space (around 20GB) on my system disk had been recovered
during the installation. However, over the next few days this space
gradually disappeared again, seemingly without giving me anything in return.

Can anyone tell me what might be going on here? Better still, is there a way
to avoid this disk space usage problem altogether?

Re: Disk space usage

Hello Steve,

It may also be the amount of disk space used by System Protection for
restore points. This tutorial will help show you how to check to see how
much is being used and how to adjust the max amount of space used as
needed if you like.

Hope this helps,

Re: Disk space usage
Hi Brink and Steve,
I have exactly the same problem as Steve. Mine is HP pavilion
model running vista home premium. I went through the vista tutorials
regarding reducing disk space for restore points. I checked that it is just 3
GB. I still could not figure out the disk space problem. Nearly 30 GB of disk
space is still missing.

I have not installed vista sp2. I believe it will be
automatically updated. Any suggestions?

I have a suspicion that maybe virus programs would have occupied
the missing disk space. How to figure it out?

Thanks,
Karunakaran.

Re: Disk space usage

Hello Karunakaran,

You can run a thorough antivirus and malware scan to see if they can
find anything that may be on your computer. Malware Bytes and Avast
antivirus are a couple of good free programs to use.

You might also run Disk Cleanup in Vista and CCleaner to see how much
junk they can find to clean out for you to.

Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

Re: Disk space usage
Did you set the reserved space at 3GB, or did you just check it and that's
what it is now?
A good program to see where all your disk space has gone is TreeSize Free.
You can get it here

Solution for decreasing disk space

Thanks for all the suggestions.. I tried all your methods.

Tuneup utilities 2009 software helped me in locating and deleting tree.dat
file. This file alone occupied nearly 26 GB.

i deleted it finally and got my free space back

I read through forums. It is mentioned that tree.dat is some kind of bug
from real in vista and it multiplies on its own whenever there is free space.
It looks like a video file but does not play in any player.

So if you are a vista user and have installed real one player, check for
tree.dat file in the roaming folder in C drive. This file occupies the free
space in the disk. Delete it!!

@ SC Tom, Thanks for suggesting TreeSize Free program. I will use it in the
future. I just checked the reserve space, it was 3GB.

@ Stephen, I think u should try locating tree.dat using TreeSize Free
program or using Tune Up utilities software and then deleting it. It might
solve the problem.
