black screen on vista, operating on safe mode only

hi! need help...i have vista laptop...got black screen... no error
code... i can only operate on safe mode... called hp and guess what,
they want me to do a system recovery... is there another way...please
help...

i've tried ;

system restore
tried disabling automatic restart after system failure
cold boot and drained the laptop


please help...

Hello Dlcomplicated and welcome to the forums arty:

looks like it could be a video driver problem as you can boot into safe
mode.

Depending how long you have had the problem the first thing would be to
do a system restore to a earlier point before the problem started, if
you have one.

you could try to update your video driver from within safe mode

you may want to try a 'Startup Repair '
(http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/91...epair.html)and see if
that helps ( as you have a system restore disk from HP and not a vista
install disk you will have to look at the repair disk download shown in
the warning box)

If this does not work you may want to run 'this tool'
(http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/17...info-tool.html)
and post the results back.

if all else fails, if it is possible for you to borrow a retail vista
install disk, you could do an upgrade install which would retain your
files. As long as you use your product key this would be OK.

It should be hopefully be possible to recover your system without the
HP system restore

Updating the video driver didn't work for me, but uninstalling and
reinstalling did the trick.
