Why would you want to end the Desktop Windows Manager? It's an integral and important Vista OS process and is necessary in order for Vista to run. It doesn't take much in the way of resources (about 32KB). In Services you will see that it "Provides Desktop Window Manager startup and maintenance services".
So leave it alone. If you are looking for added performance by stopping services that are not essential, go to:
Windows Vista SP1 Service Configurations by Black Viper
There you will find about 30-40 services that you can either disable or put in manual without harming the basic Vista operations.
