Weird whirls and sharp beep!

I have a Toshiba laptop, and I was just doing my own thing, and suddenly,
from the right side of the laptop, a weird whirl was heard, and then followed
by a sharp beep. What is going on?

Any DVD/CD broken in the DVD-drive... just a wild guess?
