Backup and Restore error 0x8007007A

I had to do a factory restore on a Dell 1420 that is 4 months old.
Vista Home Premium 32 bit
4 GB RAM
285 GB HD

A Windows backup is available from a few days ago. When attempting to
restore 47 GB from an external HD, I got the following message:
-There was an unexpected error:-
-The data area passed to a system call is too small. (0x8007007A)-
-Backup will now close.-
There is no security or anti-virus installed yet, and SYSTEM
has all permissions on the external HD and backup folder.

Any ideas or solutions?
