Trouble burning data in Vista

I have not had success in backing up single files or a complete backup. I
try different RW discs to no avail. It will start to format and then stop
and not explain the problem. I want to obviously backup all my files, but
right now I need to save them on a disc and use them on another computer.
Any help is appreciated! I cannot drag and drop either.
