Like others have said, a 32-bit OS can only address 4GB, by the time other
hardware is taken into account it'll be less than that. Detailed explantion
up here:
http://www.dasmirnov.net/blog/2008/0...ng-more-than-4

If you've got the retail version of Windows Vista Ultimate, one of the discs
in the case will be the 64-bit version. So you could at least install it to
try it out and make sure everything is working for you.

Do they even sell non-64-bit CPUs any more??

Re: Vista 32 bit and 8gig ram
The only "solution" i found is WORKAROUND using usb-sticks whixh support up
to the max u can get on usb stick, that is not really ram but cooperates
with it sort if cache-like(windows ready boost) which helped a lot on my
systemtem as i have a graphic card eating the 2 gig i have installed,
making it possible to usw more than the on-board mem whixh is eaten by my
graphics adaptor.. aint the best but probably the only way to usw more than 3
gig for RAM.. hope iz helpful for u

Re: Vista 32 bit and 8gig ram
32-bit OS's have a limit of 4gb ram...that's a complete address
limitation...anything more than 4 gigs of ram requires higher addressing
space....4 gigs is the limit.

Phisyical Address Extension doesn't always work..in fact, 9 times out of 10
it yields you nothing.

The fact you're only seeing 3 gigs of ram would indicate there's additional
addressing issues in your computer. My laptop has 2x2048mb modules...but i
only can get 2.96gb of ram to windows because of funky video addressing
issues.

the "speedboost" feature that uses USB sticks as cache is useless with more
than 2gb of physical ram, sure, vista will use it, but however it won't
actually take advantage of it like it will with < 2gb physical ram.

If you want more than the amount of ram you've got now...you *NEED NEED NEED
NEED NEED* to use a 64-bit OS...you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT achieve 8gb of ram
with a 32-bit OS....P-E-R-I-O-D!

Re: Vista 32 bit and 8gig ram

Hi,

I have an Alienware Area 51 m9750 laptop. I have 2GB of RAM installed on it
and planning to upgrade to 4GB of RAM. My system has a 32bit Vista Home
Premium installed on it and yes I know that the 32bit OS does not recognize
4GB of RAM and so I want to try out 64bit Vista Home Premium.

I heard somewhere that Microsoft is providing free upgrades to 64bit Vista
for all users of 32bit vista. is it true ? if its not, then what are the ways
that i can upgrade my OS to a 64bit version ?

Thank you.

Srikar.

Re: Vista 32 bit/ 64-bit and 8gig ram
Thank you Ken! You apparently have the right answer! Not even Intel support
knows this and I've been tearing my hair out for a week!

I happen to be running Windows Vista 64-bit and Windows will not boot-up
with 4 gigabytes of RAM either, just like in the 32-bit version!

My motherboard supports 8 gig only in the slower MHZ speeds, but above 800
MHZ, the max is supposed to be 4 gig, but even that cannot be achieved.

Your 3.1 gigabyte RAM figure is right on the money! Perhaps if I bought 512
meg, I could squeeze out another .5 gig in the 4th slot but it just isn't
worth it to me.

The extra gigabyte really worked for me though because I was using 70% of my
resources when I engaged my ATI Tuner Card through Windows Media Center. Now
I'm running at a sweet 46% - 58% with everything engaged at the same time.

I'm saving my extra 1-gig memory stick though. It's good to have around AND
it was on sale!!! LOL.

Thanks for having the correct answer.
