Taskbar freezes when I click sound icon.

I have a recurring problem that's very annoying. When I click the sound icon
in the system tray, the volume adjuster appears for about half a second and
then disappears, and my taskbar then becomes unresponsive. I am still able to
open the start menu but that is the only thing I can do. I think this may
have something to do with Windows DEP. Any suggestions?
