I own a lap top & until recently I could use "the sensor" box below the space

sorry I don't know the technical term...to double click on an icon, but I
haven't been able to do that recently.

It's called a Touchpad and you may have inadvertently turned it off. Go to
mouse properties in Control Panel and look for it.
