Restore From External Disks

I'm trying to restore files from backup disks without success. The
program does not see the files and tells me there is an I/O device error
when trying to read from the DVD. I've also copied the disks to an
external hard drive and it's not seeing the files there either. What is
the specific name of the files this program is looking for? or would an
easy Transfer cable work on the external hard drive?
