Reviving a sleeping or hibernating notebook

I recently closed my notebook lid to move to another location. When I went
to open the notebook there was a blank screen, but I could see that display
lights were lit, but the screen was black. Touching the keyboad or mouse did
nothing. I powered off and it rebooted, it came on with option for safe
mode. I went into safe mode and have not been able boot normally since. How
do I wake up my notebook?
