wireless icon in the notification area

For the past few days I have been trying to figure out why it takes so long
to connect wirelessly.
I have discovered that I'm connected immediately after boot, it's the icon
in the notification area that takes forever to change to "connected"
Is there any rhyme or reason for this?

When waking up from a sleep, the wireless connect time is very slow and the
icon correctly reflects this. That is, I am not connected until the icon says
so, unlike after a boot when I am connected and the icon says I'm not.
All drivers are updated, etc.
