Comand line defrag -b?

Hi,
Had a friend show me the command line defrag -b; which she said defrags
boot. Can't find any info on the -b option.
Tried it,seems to have done something. (LOL) or maybe it's just me!!

Any help?

The -b switch is an undocumented switch that optimizes the drive for boot.

Looks like it's undocumented. If that's the case, it's not something we
recommend that you need to run. As for what it does, I think others have
responded already :-)

something that I have been asked about a couple of times before.

One of the most useful of the DOS fdisk commands was also undocumented. In
addition to helping people it could trash a system if used indiscriminately.

I don't think the system has been available long enough for people to have a
good handle on this.

Being "undocumented" it is relatively unknown. In fact, this is the first I
have heard of it.

You may as well be the first to try it and post your results back here for
everyone to see. You will be helping others by doing so.

FWIW,
Ran it,

although I really didn't need to defrag to begin with,
(probably due to Jill's team doing excellent job with the new defrag;
although I do miss all the pretty colors-lol-)

Basically I was at 2%, and it chopped it in 1/2-1% woo big deal. but
interestingly, I gained over 500mb of free space?
it chopped the fragged folders in 1/2, and really dropped total excess
fragments.

In summary, it did something, and as David noted, it did seem to "optimize"
the drive.
I'm by no means an expert on this, and it would take more testing to
validate any results-even if it's worth doing.
As Jill pointed out, it being undocumented; and MSFT doesn't recommend that
you need to run it, who knows.

The results are attached.
Feel free to draw your own conclusions.
I did a defrag -a -v before; and after the defrag -b.

Thanks for the test and info.

Seeing as how I use PerfectDisk, which has it's own boot time defrag, I will
likely never use this. But I am certain you have assisted others by your
test.
