Backup Failing

I'm running Vista Premium and back up to a 500 Gb external hard drive. The
disc has over 150 Gb of free space but I keep getting an error message
saying that there is not enough free space as windows needs at least 400 Mb
(note Mb).

Strangely it only happens after a few weeks each time, maybe each third back
up?

Any thoughts?
