Disk drive does not spin down

I have an external Lacie 1TB disk drive.

When it's connected using Firewire its spins down correctly and switches off
when my computer goes to sleep.

HOWEVER

When it's connected using USB 2.0 it never spins down and does NOT switch
off when my computer goes to sleep.

How do I get the drive to power mange when using USB ?
